From Pali vera (“hate; hatred”); perhaps via Old Khmer vera, verā (“hostility, ill will; vengeance, revenge; evil deed; retribution; etc”). Cognate with Lü ᦵᦞᧃ (ven), Modern Khmer វេរ (vei), វេរា (veiriə). Compare Sanskrit वैर (vaira); Old Khmer biara; Modern Khmer ពៀរ (piə). From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ver, *ve, hvera, or Angkorian Old Khmer vera (“to turn, to revolve, to spin, to rotate, to wheel; to shift, to take turns, to rotate, to alternate; to be on duty, at work, or in service; turn, tour of duty, shift, relay; duty, work, service; etc”). Cognate with Modern Khmer វេរ (vei).
