From Proto-Tai *ɓloːkᴰ (“flower”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯᩬᨠ, Lao ດອກ (dǭk), Lü ᦡᦸᧅᧈ (ḋoak¹), Tai Dam ꪚꪮꪀ, ꪒꪮꪀ, Shan မွၵ်ႇ (màuk), ဝွၵ်ႇ (wàuk), Tai Nüa ᥛᥩᥐᥱ (mǒak), Phake မ︀ွက︀် (mok), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜀𑜫 (mok), 𑜈𑜨𑜀𑜫 (bok), Nong Zhuang ndog, Tày bjoóc. Doublet of กระบอก (grà-bɔ̀ɔk) and ตระบอก, both “flower”. Clipping of ดอกเบี้ย (dɔ̀ɔk-bîia), from ดอก (dɔ̀ɔk, “flower”) + เบี้ย (bîia, “money”). Compare to Malay bunga (“interest”, literally “flower”). Clipping of ดอกทอง (dɔ̀ɔk-tɔɔng), from ดอก (dɔ̀ɔk, “flower”) + ทอง (tɔɔng, “gold; golden”).
