Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *bɯːnꟲ⁴ (“ground, earth”) (Jonsson, 1991), from Middle Chinese 本 (MC pwonX, “origin, foundation”). Cognate with Lao ພື້ນ (phư̄n), Northern Thai ᨻᩨ᩠᩶ᨶ, Lü ᦗᦹᧃᧉ (puen²), Shan ပိုၼ်ႉ (pṵ̂en), Phake ပ︀ိုꩫ︀် (pün), Ahom 𑜆𑜢𑜤𑜃𑜫 (pün). Cognate via Chinese: Zhuang bonj. Doublet of ปึ๊ง (bpʉ́ng) via Teochew.
