First attested in the Inscription of Wat Si Chum (จารึกวัดศรีชุม), c. 1341-1367. Possibly borrowed from Middle Khmer សហាយ (sahāya), ultimately from Sanskrit सहाय (sahāya, “friend; follower”) or Pali sahāya (“companion”).
