Built from
Borrowed from Pali dāna (“alms; donation; gift”); ultimately from Sanskrit दान (dāna, “idem”). Cognate with Old Khmer dāna, dān; Modern Khmer ទាន (tiən); Lao ທານ (thān). Extended versions of the Sanskrit term include Sanskrit प्रदान (pradāna), from which Thai ประทาน (bprà-taan) was derived. Clipping of รับประทาน (ráp-bprà-taan, “to consume”, literally “to receive a bestowal”), from รับ (ráp, “to receive”) + ประทาน (bprà-taan, “to bestow; to confer”).
