The spelling of the term suggests an Indic borrowing; however, no such term spelled *भाषी (*bhāṣī) appears to exist in Sanskrit. However, compare Classical Persian باژ (bâž, “tribute; toll”), which is cognate to Sanskrit भक्ति (bhaktí, “distribution; division”). If the Thai was borrowed from the Persian, the spelling may have been motivated by hypercorrection to match the form of an Indic, rather than Iranic, word. Cognate with Lao ພາສີ (phā sī), Khmer ភាស៊ី (phiəsii), ភស៊ី (phĕəʼsii), or ផាស៊ី (phaasii). The "advantage" sense is separated from the "tax" sense by TDP, though it is likely that they are etymologically connected.
