From Sanskrit อโศก (aśoka, literally “sorrowless”), equivalent to Thai อ (à) + โศก (sòok). Compare Pali asoka. From clipping of อโศกมนตรี, the title of a Thai nobleman who owned the land which would become the location of the place.
