Pittayaporn (2009) reconstructed Proto-Tai *truəᴬ (“head”) while noting that it might in fact be a post-Proto-Tai loanword. In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᩅᩫ, Lao ຫົວ (hūa), Lü ᦷᦠ (ḣo), Tai Dam ꪬꪺ, Shan ႁူဝ် (hǒ), Tày thua, Ahom 𑜑𑜥 (hū) or 𑜍𑜥 (rū) or 𑜍𑜤𑜈𑜫 (ruw). In other Tai, Zuojiang Zhuang hu (Ningming and Longzhou dialects) or vuo (Daxin dialect). Compare Chinese 頭 (MC duw). From Proto-Tai *krɯəwᴬ (“to laugh”). In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ຫົວ (hūa), Shan ၶူဝ် (khǒ), Lü ᦷᦃ (ẋo). In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang riu. Compare Sui gul and gol (“to laugh”), Southern Kam gol (“to laugh”).
