From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kɛːŋᴬ² (“soup; broth”), from Middle Chinese 羹 (MC kaeng, “thick soup”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Khün ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ, Lao ແກງ (kǣng), Lü ᦶᦂᧂ (k̇aeng), Shan ၵႅင် (kěng), Tai Nüa ᥐᥦᥒ (kaeng), Saek เก๋ง, Yong ᨠᩯ᩠ᨦ. Corrupted from แกล้ง (glɛ̂ɛng) which is influenced by ต้ม (dtôm, “to boil; to trick”).
