Borrowed from Sanskrit व्यापार (vyāpāra, “service; serving”), according to Assistant Professor Chirapat Prapandvidya, fellow of the Royal Society of Thailand in the field of classical languages. Also probably from Old Khmer phye (“to leave in the care or custody (of)”) + °pāla (“keeper; protector; guard”). Cognate with Lao ພະຍາບານ (pha nyā bān), Modern Khmer ព្យាបាល (pyiəbaal).
