When Letters Bend การอ่าน

Clusters, silent leading ห and อ, false clusters, the inherent vowels — the cases spelling doesn't tell you, each on a real word.

Phasa · Scriptout loud

Knowing the letters isn’t yet reading. These are the rules that turn strings of consonants and vowels into spoken words — the part most apps skip, and the part that separates recognising letters from reading Thai in the wild.

Reading rules

Clusters · อักษรควบแท้

True clusters ควบแท้

An initial consonant blended with ร ล ว into one onset. Both letters are pronounced, and the tone is set by the firstconsonant’s class.

Clusters · อักษรควบไม่แท้

False clusters ควบไม่แท้

Written like a cluster, but the is silent — or the pair changes sound entirely. ทร is read /s/.

ิงjingreal (ร silent)
ทรายsaaisand (ทร → s)
เศ้าsâosad (ร silent)

Leading consonant · อักษรนำ

Silent ห ห นำ

A silent placed before a low-class sonorant (ง ญ ณ น ม ย ร ล ว) makes the syllable follow high-classtone rules — unlocking the rising and low tones those letters couldn’t otherwise reach.

มาmǎadog (rising)
นูnǔumouse (rising)
ญิงyǐngwoman

Leading consonant · อักษรนำ

Silent อ อ นำ

A silent before in exactly four words makes them mid-class (so mái èek gives a low tone). Just memorise the four.

ยู่yùuto be at
ยากyàakto want

Silent letters · การันต์

The karan mark ◌์

The thanthakhat mark ◌์ silences the letter beneath it — and sometimes a cluster it drags along — almost always in loanwords from Sanskrit, Pali or English.

Inherent vowels · สระอะ / โอะ

Vowels you can't see

Sometimes there’s no vowel written at all. A consonant cluster with no vowel carries an inherent -o-; and in some multi-syllable words an unwritten short -a- links the syllables.

นกnókbird (inherent -o-)
ลมlomwind (-o-)
ถ‑หฺนนthanŏnroad (-a- link)
