A syllable’s tone isn’t marked directly — you derive it. Three inputs decide it together: the class of the initial consonant, whether the syllable is live or dead (and the vowel’s length), and which tone mark, if any, sits above. The marks don’t name a fixed tone — the same mark gives a different tone on each class. Learn the procedure once, and you can read any syllable aloud.
Knowing the letters isn’t yet reading. These are the rules that turn strings of consonants and vowels into spoken words — the part most apps skip, and the part that separates recognising letters from reading Thai in the wild.

Consonants

Eleven letters. Each pairs with a low-class twin that shares its sound — together they cover the same consonants across two tone classes. Home of the rising tone.
Mid class อักษรกลาง9 shown
Nine letters — the cleanest class. With the tone marks they reach all five tones, each mark mapping to exactly one. The place to begin.
Low class อักษรต่ำ23 shown
Twenty-four — the largest class, and the one that behaves differently: the same tone mark lands a different tone here than on mid or high.
/kʰ/3 letters
Five letters, one sound. ข ค ฆ preserve the Sanskrit kh / g / gh distinctions; ฃ and ฅ were native Thai additions for an old /x/ sound, now obsolete.
/tɕʰ/3 letters
Sanskrit's ch / j / jh all merged to /tɕʰ/ — kept apart to spell loanwords and to carry high (ฉ) vs low (ช ฌ) tone class.
/s/4 letters
Sanskrit had three sibilants — ś ṣ s (ศ ษ ส), all now /s/. Thai then invented ซ to get a low-class /s/ for the tone system.
/tʰ/6 letters
Six letters for one sound — Sanskrit's retroflex row (ṭh ḍ ḍh) and dental row (th d dh) both merged into /tʰ/; the retroflex ones signal an Indic loanword.
/pʰ/3 letters
Sanskrit ph / b / bh, merged to /pʰ/ across high (ผ) and low (พ ภ) class.
/f/2 letters
Both native Thai inventions — Sanskrit and Pali had no /f/. Paired only to give a high and a low option.

ด is the everyday native /d/; ฎ is rare, sitting in the Indic retroflex block.
/t/2 letters
ต is common; ฏ is the Sanskrit retroflex ṭ, found in loanwords.
/n/2 letters
ณ is the Sanskrit retroflex ṇ (loanwords); น is the everyday native /n/.
/j/2 letters
ย is the everyday /j/; ญ (Sanskrit ñ) gives /j/ mainly in loanwords, and /n/ as a final.

ล is common; ฬ is the Pali retroflex ḷ, in only a handful of words.

ห (Sanskrit h) is high class and doubles as a silent tone-marker; ฮ is a native low-class /h/.

The two rules skeptics test: a low-class dead syllable splits by vowel length — short → high, long → falling. And mái èek gives low on mid/high but falling on low; mái thô gives falling on mid/high but high on low. Low class is the shifted one throughout.
