ศาล

noun

A native recording for this entry is on the way.

1
n.

shrine

Built from

From Sanskrit शाल (śālá, “court; rampart”) or शाला (śā́lā, “court; hall; house; workshop”); probably via Angkorian Old Khmer śāla (“court; hall; pavilion; residence”). Compare Old Khmer sālā; Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer śālā; Angkorian Old Khmer sāla. Cognate with Modern Khmer សាលា (saalaa); Lao ສານ (sān). Doublet of ศาลา (sǎa-laa). Ultimately the same as the "court" sense of Etymology 1, with semantic transfer from the first component, มหา (má-hǎa, “grand, great”), of the compound word มหาศาล. From apheresis of ไพศาล (pai-sǎan).
