Borrowed from Teochew 桌 (doh⁴, “table; desk”). Cognate with Lao ໂຕະ (to), Khmer តុ (tok), Lü ᦷᦑᦰ (to!). Related to Middle Chinese 桌 (traewk), Japanese 卓 (taku), Korean 탁(卓) (tak). See the etymology of the corresponding lemma form. Semi-learned borrowing from Malay tok (“grandfather”) or from clipping of Malay datuk (“grandfather”, also used as a title of distinction), from which Thai ดะโต๊ะ is derived.
