From Proto-Tai *koːŋᴬ (“to heap up”). Cognate with Lao ກອງ (kǭng), Lü ᦂᦸᧂ (k̇oang), Tai Nüa ᥐᥩᥒ (koang), Tai Dam ꪀꪮꪉ, Shan ၵွင် (kǎung), Zhuang gong (“classifier for heaped-up things”). The "troop; bureau" sense is likely a semantic extension of the "pile" sense, via a back-formation from กองทัพ (gɔɔng-táp, “army”).
