Phasa · The Path

How Thai is learned here. เส้นทาง

Five steps, always in this order. Each one has a daily practice, one honest measure, and a door that opens the next. Ten minutes a day walks the whole road.

The steps are skills, not levels. A beginner starts at ๑. A reader of ten years still has ๑ work to do, and the Path says exactly what it is.

Soundเสียง

Before anything can be read, the eye has to know the letters and the ear has to know the five tones. Phasa teaches both as skills that are measured, not chapters that are finished.

The script comes a few letters a day, three by default and as many as ten if you choose, each with its name and its sound in a native voice, the words it lives in, and the letter it is easiest to confuse with. Every letter carries several skills, the looped hand, the loopless hand, the wild fonts on shop signs, spelling, writing, so a fluent reader who cannot read a menu is served by the same course as a first-week beginner. The tones come one pair at a time, from the easiest for a European ear to the hardest, heard in five voices, then said back with your own pitch drawn against the native’s.

  • DailyNew letters, three a day or your own number, and the ones coming back. One tone pair, ten trials.
  • Measured byYour page: how much of one real paragraph you can sound out. Your ear: tone pairs reliable, out of ten.
  • OpensRead, when your page passes 80%.

Receipts. Identification training across several talkers holds at six months (Wang, Spence, Jongman and Sereno 1999; Uchihara et al. 2025). Recall beats recognition (Rowland 2014). Learning in more than one typeface transfers to new fonts (Pelzl 2025).

Readอ่าน

The reading is the lesson. Real people from all over Thailand read real stories, and the dictionary is inside the sentence, one tap away.

Every reading knows how much of it is already yours, so the library hands you the story you are ready for, not the one that will break you. Mark a word known, learning, or new, and the whole library re-counts itself. Take the audio on the walk; the words stay with the voices.

  • DailyOne reading, or one listen. Ten minutes.
  • Measured byWords known, and how much of the next story is already yours.
  • OpensKeep, the day after your first marked word.

Receipts. Glosses inside the text improve vocabulary acquisition (Yun 2011, meta-analysis). Comprehensible input as the engine (Krashen 1982), carried through the immersion lineage.

Keepทบทวน

Nothing met on the Path is left to be forgotten. Letters, tone pairs, words and the sentences you kept all return when they are about to fade, in one queue.

The scheduler models each thing you know as stability, difficulty and how likely you are to recall it right now, and asks only when asking helps. There are no streaks to feed and no badges. The record is for you.

  • DailyThe cards due, usually five to ten minutes.
  • Measured byDue today, and retention over time.
  • OpensRuns under every other step, always.

Receipts. FSRS (Ye, Su and Cao 2022), trained on hundreds of millions of real reviews, fewer reviews than SM-2 for the same retention. Spacing beats massing (Cepeda et al. 2006).

Out thereข้างนอก

Thai does not stay in a library. It is on Netflix, on YouTube, in the group chat and on the menu. Out there is where you bring it back in.

Tap a word in any subtitle and understand it. Keep the line, and it travels into Phasa with its audio and its source, and comes back in Keep. Paste any Thai you meet and read it with the same dictionary inside.

  • DailyOne line mined from something you actually watched or read.
  • Measured byLines kept, and how much of a real subtitle track you already know.
  • OpensSpeak, with your first reliable tone pair.

Receipts. Sentence mining and the immersion method (AJATT, MIA, Refold). Contextual learning of vocabulary from authentic input (Nation 2001).

Say it back. Shadowing a line the moment you hear it is the oldest way to learn a melody, and Phasa measures it honestly.

Your pitch is read in the browser, nothing uploaded, and drawn against the narrator’s, warm where you match and cool where you drift. The error is named in words, “your rise stopped early”, never as a number in hertz.

  • DailyOne line shadowed, five rungs from mumble to meaning.
  • Measured byHow closely your melody follows the native’s.
  • OpensThe road loops. A better ear sends you back to ๑ with harder pairs.

Receipts. Visual pitch feedback improves tone production (Hardison 2004; Chun et al. 2015). Pitch tracking by YIN (de Cheveigné and Kawahara 2002); shape compared by dynamic time warping.
