From Sanskrit वाट (vāṭa, “enclosure”), possibly via Old Khmer វត្ត (vatta), វត (vata), វ័ត (vâta), វត្យ (vatya), វត្រ (vatra), វត្ថ (vattha), -វាត (°vāta, “Buddhist temple compound; monastery”). Possibly related to Old Khmer វត្ត៑ (“to encircle; to enclose > enceinte”). Cognate with Modern Khmer វត្ត (voat); Lao ວັດ (wat); Lü ᦞᧆ (vad); Shan ဝတ်ႉ (wâ̰t). From Old Khmer *vas, vas, vās, *vās (“to measure the circumference of land”). Cognate with Modern Khmer វាស់ (vŏəh).
