From Proto-Tai *ɗaŋᴬ (“to make noise”). Cognte with Zhuang ndaengz (“roll of thunder”) (dialectal). Inherited from Proto-Tai *ɗaŋᴬ (“nose”). In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Isan ดัง, Lao ດັງ (dang), Northern Thai ᨯᩢ᩠ᨦ (daŋ⁴), Khün ᨯᩢ᩠ᨦ (daŋ⁴), Lü ᦡᧂ (ḋang), Tai Dam ꪒꪰꪉ (đăng), Shan လင်/ၼင် (lǎng/nǎng) as in ၶူႈလင်/ၶူႈၼင် (khūu lǎng/khūu nǎng), Tai Nüa ᥘᥒ (lang), Ahom 𑜓𑜂𑜫 (daṅ) or 𑜃𑜂𑜫 (naṅ), Aiton ဒင︀် (daṅ) or ꩫ︀င︀် (naṅ). In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang ndaeng, Bouyei ndangl. Possibly cognate with Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ijuŋ (“nose”).
