From Proto-Tai *naːjᴬ (“maternal grandmother”). The /n-/ -> /j-/ transformation is due to contamination by ย่า (yâa, “paternal grandmother”), which is semantically similar. Compare Indonesian nyai; Khmer យាយ (yiəy); Lao ຍາຍ (nyāi), ຍາຽ (nyāi); Shan ၼၢႆး (náai); Zhuang dai.
