Believed to be from Pali deyya, which in turn is a conversion of Thai ไท (tai, “human being, person; Tai; Siamese Thai; etc”). Declared by the government of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram to be the name of the modern country and its people, replacing the name สยาม (sà-yǎam, “Siam”), through the constitution dated October 3, 1939 (effective as from October 6, 1939).
