Uncertain. Suggested by Charatphon Patiyan to be from ข้าว (kâao, “rice”) + หนม (nǒm, “sweet”). Compare Lao ເຂົ້າໜົມ (khao nom). Possibly related to Old Chinese 粔籹 (OC *ɡaʔ naʔ), a delicacy from the state of Chu.
