From Proto-Tai *najꟲ (“this”). Southwestern Tai such as Thai นี้ [niːꟲ²] and some Central Tai dialects show reflexes *iː. This is probably because this etymon is a grammatical word. In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ນີ້ (nī), Northern Thai ᨶᩦ᩶, Khün ᨶᩦ᩶, Lü ᦓᦲᦰ (ni) or ᦓᦲᧉ (nii²), Tai Dam ꪙꪲ꫁, Shan ၼႆႉ (nâ̰i). In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang neix. In other Tai, cognate with Zuojiang Zhuang naej (Longzhou dialect) or naeq / naex (Daxin dialect) or neij (Ningming dialect). Compare also Chinese 若 (OC *njaɡ, “that”), 爾 (MC nyeX, “that”).
