Built from

From Proto-Tai *ɗajꟲ (“to obtain”). Cognate with Lao ໄດ້ (dai), Northern Thai ᨯᩱ᩶, Lü ᦺᦡᧉ (ḋay²), Shan လႆႈ (lāi), Tai Dam ꪼꪒ꫁, Zhuang ndaej. Compare Sui qdyais (“to get, to obtain”), Southern Kam lis (“to get”), Proto-Hlai *ɗɯː (“to get”). Simpson (2001) suggests that it ultimately comes from the Middle Chinese 得 (MC tok), which was used to mean "can" at the end of a sentence, as in Thai.
